Part One-Mara Provincial Park to Ottawa
July 23rd, 2019/Mara Provincial Park to Furnace Falls
Day's total/KM 90/elevation gain 211 meters
Total to date/KM 4730.9/Total elevation gain 26943 meters
I allowed Google Maps to take the reins and route me thru once again. I crossed the TC shortly after a rushed exit from the campground, the mosquitoes were ferocious. I was soon on gravel that continued for several k’s then the road turned once again to pavement. My intent was to find camping at Kinmount, there was nothing. I grabbed groceries then headed out. I left the 503 and onto White Boundary Road to Furnace Falls. It was a day use area “no camping signs were posted”, I ignored that! I pitched in plain view of the highway rather than the back of the park, I wanted a picnic table, there were none out back. I went for a swim after dinner, it felt good after a long days ride. I fell asleep to the chatter of raccoons and the periodic crunching of plastic, they were all feasting on the overflow of garbage. It was an uneventful night.
July 24th, 2019/Furnace Falls to Stealth Camping (20 Km’s past McArthur Mills)
Day's total/KM 120/elevation gain 820 meters
Total to date/KM 4850.9/Total elevation gain 27763 meters
I followed the 503 along, then the 118. Just outside of Cheddar all traffic was detoured to Hwy 48, it was narrow, hilly, dusty and windy and also under construction. A busy little bit with the truck and car traffic all squished on a country road. When I dropped onto the 28 I followed it thru to Bancroft. Stopped at Tim Horton's for some lunch then onward once again. I rode past McArthur Mills, really without even noticing, I pushed on another 20 or so k’s. Where the 514 branches from the 28, the 28 turns east it becomes quit hilly, there were a few good ones, pushing the bike didn't help. it was getting late and I was tired and hot.
I pitched just off the highway, slightly above it behind a group of trees. I really wasn’t at all concerned about being seen and I was in no mood to pitch in the wood. They kinda reminded me of the "Blair Witch Project". I had a good nights sleep with no issues.
July 25th, 2019/Stealth Camp to Renfrew KOA
Day's total/KM 98/elevation gain 903 meters
Total to date/KM 4948.9/Total elevation gain 28666 meters
Another warm one. I was up before 6, made oatmeal and downed a few other goodies from the food bag. I was still hungry and on the hunt for the first restaurant or grocery store. I stopped in Denbigh, had a good breakfast along with good conversation with another patron. When it was time to go he paid the tab, once again an unexpected kind gesture. I grabbed groceries, ate lunch at Subway in Renfrew, it was hot. Then rode the additional 12 kilometers to the KOA. It was a nice spot, a little further out than I'd like. I showered, ate dinner and with what was left of the day I did what I do best, I relaxed.
July 26th, 2019/KOA Renfrew/Rest Day
Day's total/KM 24/elevation gain 268 meters
Total to date/KM 4972.9/Total elevation gain 28934 meters
I decided to stay a second night. I was up early, did laundry and all the prep for tomorrow’s ride. Just before noon I rode back into Renfrew, had lunch and dealt with other business. It was another warm day, again in the low 30’s.
July 27th, 2019/KOA Renfrew to Westland Clover Park Campground
Day's total/KM 84/elevation gain 245 meters
Total to date/KM 5056.9/Total elevation gain 29179 meters
Just broke the 5000 kilometer mark!
I made my way to the Ottawa River to River Road. Around 20 Km’s outside of Arnprior it crossed the Algonquin Trail, neither Google or RWGPS had mapped this, apparently it was a fairly new section. I rode it into Anrprior and parted ways with the trail, it swung Southwest. Google mapped the rest of the way in to the campground just outside of downtown Ottawa.
July 28th, 2019/Westland Clover to Ottawa/Return
Day's total/KM 60/elevation gain 320 meters
Total to date/KM 5116.9/Total elevation gain 29499 meters
The ride into Ottawa was pretty straight forward. From the campground I was soon able to pick up the bike path that paralleled the Ottawa River, that took me rite into town. There's bike paths throughout the city , a lot of cyclists make use of them. It was Sunday, they close sections of road that run next to the Rideau River down town.
July 29th, 2019/Westland Clover to Ottawa/Return
Day's total/KM 60/elevation gain 320 meters
Total to date/KM 5176.9/Total elevation gain 29819 meters
I wanted to see more of Ottawa, it really is a beautiful city. It was smokin hot today, I headed for The Canadian Museum of History that took me across the river into Quebec. I had lunch back in Ottawa, then the National Arts Centre. The War Museum was on route back, just off the cycle path. I stopped in at MEC, grabbed some groceries then peddled back to camp and arrived about 4:30. I bought a new set of Schwalbe’s, these are a road tire and should roll a little better the Mondial’s were more for gravel use.
The skies were pretty dark when I rolled into the campground, I decided to mount the tires under the shelter. Sure enough there was the sound of thunder then the rains. It didn’t amount to much then the sun came out and the rest of the evening was decent.

Day's total/KM 60/elevation gain 160 meters
Total to date/KM 4352.9/Total elevation gain 25742 meters
I allowed James to set the timing for today’s ride. The plan was to meet at the restaurant at 11 AM, then catch the ferry over to Tobermory. I have a few years on James, he’s also a much stronger and quicker on the bike than me. I did arrive finally, a bit late but still had plenty of time for food and the early afternoon ferry. Manitoulin Island was great to cycle thru, quiet with little traffic, fields and farmlands along the way and a few gentle hills. The Hwy 6 has a good ride able safe shoulder all the way thru and the road surface was in good condition. The ferry crossing was a bit short of two hours.
Once we reached Tobermory it was a few kilometers to the campgrounds. We setup them it was back into town for dinner, fish n chips. Being from the west coast halibut would have been my choice, white fish here was the go to for the locals, it was pretty good.
July 19th, 2019/Happy Hearts Campground to Harrison Park Campground
Day's total/KM 117/elevation gain 236 meters
Total to date/KM 4469.9/Total elevation gain 25978 meters
Shortly after exiting the campground onto Hwy 6 it became a-lot less pleasant to cycle on. The wide shoulder that was present all the way thru from Espanola was gone, not to be seen again with the exception of some short bits, I do mean short. Lots of traffic tho all along and rite thru to Owen Sound. I grabbed some groceries, good thing there was nothing near the campground. Good thing I'm a tenter the campground was busy. The pitch was on a grassy area above the chaos of RV’s below, bonus. At times us tenters get the dirty end of the stick. I was hoping to do laundry, the campground was unable to get soap so I hand washed then machine dried a few clothes. It was another hot and humid day today. It rained pretty good at times before dark and let up later in the evening. The campground post quiet hours, clearly no one is there to enforce the rule. The weekend warriors were there to eat and party and they did well into the early hours.
July 20th, 2019/Harrison Park Campground to Cedar Grove Park
Day's total/KM 83/elevation gain 336 meters
Total to date/KM 4552.9/Total elevation gain 26314 meters
The exit from Owen Sound was hilly, it was hot and humid once again. I ground out the first 20 or so kilometers trying to adapt. There was some relief coming into Meaford, a long descent allowing for a bit of a cool-down. I stopped for breakfast, a couple asked me to join them. It’s always nice to talk to fellow cyclists, their local knowledge of roads, trails etc is always helpful. I then continued on Hwy 26, when it crossed the Georgian Trail I hopped on. In Collingwood I stop to resolve an iPhone issue I’ve been having.
Cedar Grove Park looked like a good option and not far from Collingwood. I gave them a call, the women was super nice and they had room. I pitched then rode off to the grocery store a few k’s away, ate then showered. This was a well established trailer park, the property had been in the family for years. They were elbow to elbow, dog barking, ethnic music blaring, kids screaming, neighbors yelling at neighbors. It was like the “Trailer Park Boys”. I decided to stay another day.
July 21st, 2019/Rest Day/Cedar Grove Park
Laundry detail today, cleaned, organized things for tomorrow’s ride, the usual. Rode back for more groceries, picked up some air fresheners for the tent at Canadian Tire. Stopped in for an ice-cream cone on the way back and used their WiFi. I ended up having to buy another phone and was wanting to transfer over my music, no luck, will have to wait till I get back home.
July 22nd, 2019/Cedar Grove Park to Mara Prov Park
Day's total/KM 88/elevation gain 418 meters
Total to date/KM 4640.9/Total elevation gain 26732 meters
I allowed Google Maps to pick the exit from Cedar Grove Park, I thought it did a great job. The roads were relatively quiet and I was able to experience more of rural Ontario. An old rail bed, now part of The Trans Canada Trail took me into Orillia. It was shaded, passing by farmlands, there were a number of cyclists which was nice to see. I ate lunch in Orillia then continued along a cycling path that skirted the lake shore separated from traffic thru to the campground. It was another great day of riding!

Day's total/KM 117.9/elevation gain 1101 meters
Total to date/KM 3910/Total elevation gain 24157
Another tough section, much of it with minimal shoulder. With only one more section after today I’ll have options to ditch the TC which of course I'll willingly take. I met another cyclist today, I haven't seen many, he was heading West towing a trailer to the Interior of B.C. We ate lunch together, shared our experiences this far, he figured he had a 50/50 chance of survival, grim odds I thought, this was suppose to a holiday not a funeral. Hope my odds are better! The day started out somewhat overcast then the sun appeared early in the afternoon, winds again were blowing off Superior and I was riding into then.
July 13th, 2019/Pancake Bay Prov Park to Sault Ste. Marie
Day's total/KM 83/elevation gain 331 meters
Total to date/KM 3993/Total elevation gain 24488
It was a warm one today! I followed the TC through to Highway 552 then the 556 and onward to the bike shop, Velorution. I went off for some lunch, groceries etc while the bike was in surgery, time for another new chain.
I camped the night at the bike shop in back, they allow access to the washrooms, shower, plug-ins for charging all for free. I was the only camper!
July 14th, 2019/Sault Ste. Marie to Thessalon
Day's total/KM 87.9/elevation gain 314 meters
Total to date/KM 4080.9/Total elevation gain24802 meters
I'm now in the 4000 plus kilometer club!
I was up shortly after 6, a quick shower then pack and off to breakfast. I took the Great Northern Road, it cuts thru town to the St Marie’s River. Queen Ste E took me along, with the river on my right and I was soon on 17b. I followed the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail into Thessalon avoiding the TC completely. Today's section was the first that I’ve been able to enjoy since entering Ontario. There was gravel in places, some decent little hills, nothing major. It was peaceful, very little traffic, lots to see. It was a good cycling day! The campground was along the shores of Lake Huron. Pricey but a nice place to pitch.
July 15th, 2019/Thessalon to Blind River
Day's total/KM 55/elevation gain 118 meters
Total to date/KM 4135.9/Total elevation gain 24920 meters
The exit was short, out the back of the campground and I was soon on the TC heading East. I picked up once again the Great Lakes Water Front Trail, gravel to start which carried on for several kilometers and reappeared often, more hills along with a frequent swarm of horse flies. All in this route is more than worth the extra time and perhaps effort-it’s cycling at its best, with little traffic.
I broke a shift cable, the front, I'm not carrying spares. There are no bike shops, the nearest was off route and not an option. A fellow cycle tourist “James” helped me out, he’s got a spare.
I pitched down at the marina in town, did laundry, showered etc. I took a walk in the evening to a long since abandoned mill that was not far from the marina. There's a museum as well showcasing the history of the mill unfortunately I never got there. There were heavy rains during the night, I was hoping for better weather come morning, I'd planned on meeting up with James.
July 16th, 2019/Blind River to Serpent River Campground
Day's total/KM 29/elevation gain 102 meters
Total to date/KM 4164.9/Total elevation gain 25022 meters
James was in Serpent River with a shift cable and taking a rest day due to weather. I opted to chance it and ride. I could see before starting out I was riding into the worst. It started to rain shortly into the ride and got a little worse, it was still warm despite the rain. It soon let up and the ride in was well shouldered making for safe passage. My fixed gears weren't really a problem on that section, I adjusted the stop on derailleur to the middle ring.
The repair was simple taking little time to thread in a new cable. I was grateful to have all my gears back again. I’ll now carry a spare, lesson learned. It was overcast when I pitched then the sun showed up, it too hot on the grassy field prompting a move to shade. A bit of relax time then dinner with James across the street, the food was decent. I picked up the tab as thanks for the cable.
July 17th, 2019/Serpent River Campground to Green Acres Tent and Trailer Park
Day's total/KM 128/elevation gain 560 meters
Total to date/KM 4292.9/Total elevation gain 25582 meters
I followed once again The Great Lakes Water Front Trail, there were decent sections of gravel along with short but steep hills adding considerable time to the ride. I arrived late, James rode in on the TC, he's also a much faster rider, he was set up and waiting for me to show, it 6 PM by the time i got in. I pitched, left the complete setup for after dinner. Showered, then headed to the restaurant with James. The special was chicken with all the fixings, it was good, sorta like Xmas dinner less the turkey.

Part Two-Thunder Bay to Rabbit Blanket Campground
July 7th, 2019/Rainbow Lake Prov Park to Marathon
Day's total/KM 108/elevation gain 947 meters
Total to date/KM 3569/Total elevation gain 21620 meters
This was a tough section today, climb after climb in series with very little relief. The head winds even made the downs slow, gusts at times were making it difficult to control the bike. It was a long day! The ride into Marathon along Penninsula Road was a decent down, I could only think about tomorrow mornings exit, back the way I came. I headed straight for the grocery store and restocked. I've defiantly lost weight and know that I need to eat more, it’s been a challenge acquiring food, having the room to pack it as well the added weight.
Penn Lake Campground was of course situated beside Penn Lake, it was beautiful but the mosquitoes weren't. I arrived somewhat later than I'd like making for a scramble to pitch, eat then shower leaving little time to relax. I was soon in the tent and off to bed
July 8th, 2019/Marathon to White River
Day's total/KM 97.1/elevation gain 830 meters
Total to date/KM 3666.1/Total elevation gain 22450 meters
This section had the least amount of ride-able shoulder, paved that is. When I had to kick off, the gravel was soft, making it impossible to steer the bike. It was warm today, no cloud cover. The winds were kinder, at my back in some areas but not providing any great assist. A lot less hills today, or maybe I was just getting numb to them! I cruised down main street once I hit White River and headed for the Post Office, then back out for groceries
The Tourist Center allows cyclists to pitch on the lawn. There was a water tap, no showers, no washrooms after hours. Can't say as I get that, don't cyclists need a washroom? I'm always grateful for the free camping but... The Husky Service Station has showers, a little pricey, $8.00, I opted to wash up as best I could for free back at the tourist station. The parking lot, which I was next to made for a slightly busier night that I would have liked.
July 9th, 2019/White River to Wawa
Day's total/KM 91/elevation gain 308 meters
Total to date/KM 3757.1/Total elevation gain 22758 meters
I've been on the road now for two months!
My first stop was Subway in White River, take away lunch for the road. Clear skies today, it was going to be another warm one. Headwinds again and strong, they blew all day. These winds have been giving my legs a crazy workout, mentally I’m trying to accept them as the norm, it is what it is.
Very poor road conditions today, and it’s the TC, along with bad drivers made for probably my worst day yet, safety is paramount. Too many close passes, a semi driver that just wanted me off the road, blasting his horn. Cyclists are already challenged without the added fear of being “Bumper Fluff”.
Again the Tourist Center in Wawa allows cyclists to pitch for free after 6 PM. It wasn't so comfy hanging around in sweaty gear waiting to pitch. There was an alternative, ride back North to a pay site just out of town. It's no brainer for me, free generally wins out.
July 10th, 2019/Wawa to Rabbit Blanket Campground
Day's total/KM 35/elevation gain 298 meters
Total to date/KM 3792.1/Total elevation gain 23056 meters
No sooner did I wake then heard the patter of rain on the tent. I haven’t been watching the forecast so it came as a surprise. There were a few more brief showers, by mid morning the sun was out. Head winds again today, strong ones. It was a short section, highway conditions improved, opposite from yesterday’s rather nerve racking ride. The truck traffic seemed lighter as well. I arrived shortly after noon, showered then did laundry.
Finally the weather presented the opportunity to test the MSR Hubba Hubba-NX. At around 8 PM a thunder storm passed over the campground. The rains were so heavy the ground could not absorb the volume and the tent was sitting in a couple of inches of water. See the picture of my Pannier with the “High Tide Mark”. I could push on the floor, it was like being on a water bed. The interior was bone dry but unfortunately the seams at the top of the tent did leak a bit.

Part One-Thunder Bay to Rabbit Blanket Campground
July 4th, 2019/Thunder Bay to Nipigon
Day's total/KM 106.8/elevation gain 634 meters
Total to date/KM 3567.8/Total elevation gain 21307 meters
I took advantage of the showers prior to leaving the KOA. Cooked breakfast under the shelter on a real electric stove. Weather looked good, they were calling for a 60% chance of rain.
On exiting the KOA I steered towards Lake Superior and followed Lake-shore Drive. I had stopped at a junction to check my routing wanting to avoid the TC for as long as possible, that’s where I met Jim. He was out for his morning ride, we chatted then he suggested we ride together, he’d show me the back routes. We peddled our way through shaded quiet twisty roads with frequent views of the lake to our right. Eventually ending up at his residence, a beautiful home overlooking the lake. We walked out front and I dipped my feet into Lake Superior. He shared his knowledge about the history, winter and summer life on the lake. We eventually parted at the junction to the TC, it was a fun and memorable morning, “Thank you Jim”.
I carried along for a couple of kilometers then crossed the highway, ate lunch at the truck stop. I spotted earlier an over sized transport with Police escort moving a blade from a Wind Turbine, I couldn't resist checking it out. I was soon East bound once again. The next 70k was hit and miss for a ride-able shoulder. I tried my best to watch traffic and kicked off to the gravel when I felt unsafe, I did that a lot.
I arrived in Nipigon around 5, nice little town with all the amenities. Camping was not far from town, just down the hill next to the marina, great spot to pitch, quiet, along the shores of Lake Superior.
July 5th, 2019/Rest Day/Nipigon
I had to time a General Delivery pick up in White River for Monday, I chose Nipigon for the one rest day. I have to admit the heat was draining and I’ve clocked some reasonable kilometers these past days. I gotta remember it’s not a race. I slept in as long as possible, never seems long enough. I made coffee and yes the usual, rolled oats, they were getting a bit tiresome. Showered, updated the blog, caught up on a few other thing, finance tracking etc. I went into town for lunch, then more groceries, looking to find alternatives for breakfast. Washed the bike at the local car wash-never done that before, not sure it was a good idea. Back to camp for some real down time, mostly sat under the shade of the gazebo. I returned back into town for supper, Chinese Food was on the menu. It wasn’t the best but was the only show in town. Not far from camp I spotted an old rail bed, the tracks were long since gone. I rode along and explored up towards the highway thinking it might be an interesting exit for tomorrow’s ride East. On the ride back a group of boys were gathered, swimming and jumping from the dock and trestle. Each one edging on the other but always in a caring way. It took me back to my own youth and the carefree days of summer.
July 6th, 2019/Nipigon to Rainbow Falls Provincial Park
Day's total/KM 81/elevation gain 1016 meters
Total to date/KM 3648.8/Total elevation gain 22323 meters
The exit along the rail bed didn’t pan out. I backtracked thru town then East on the TC. Some decent climbs today, no sooner did I go down then it was straight back up again with little to no relief. Back to the headwinds as well, they were cool which was welcoming, blowing off Lake Superior. The shoulder continued to play now you see me now you don’t. My intent today was Terrace Bay, there was camping but I was told the decent was a good one, that meant back up and out in the morning, it wasn't going to happen. I was told the pitch was on the beach with no shade. I opted to call it a day at Rainbow Falls Provincial Park, pricey place to camp as are all the Government of Ontario Campgrounds, $42.66 for tenting, most I’ve paid yet! I was awoken early to sounds of breaking branches and thrashing in the bush. Unlikely it was four legged with all that racket, sure enough there was a voice. The couple next to me partied well into the night and well I guess into the morning. I glanced over to their site, hmm-several empty bottles of hard liqueur on the picnic table. At this point they had both retreated to their tent for a little shut-eye. I ate breakfast, packed up then headed to the washroom. When I returned the party goers were well into packing and split before me. Not sure if they should have been driving.

Day's total/KM 131/elevation gain 602 meters

I was up early! An RV arrived some time during the night and parked next to me. This morning it sounded like they were doing interior Reno’s at 5 AM. I laid in bed for a bit, figured I should start the day and exited the tent at 5:15. Not a cloud to be seen, the sun already had some teeth and it was still early.
I hit the road at 7:15 following 11B then East on Hwy 11. The road surface was good, paved shoulder in sections, gravel in others, a mixed bag. With the exception of the one store with a very limited selection there was nothing clear thru to my final destination.
When I reached Shebandowen there was no camping, there was nothing. I'd actually missed what was marked on the map as a town. It was Stealth Camp or push on. My water supply was replenished, I spotted some machinery and buildings from the highway and figured it was worth a try. The fellow was more than willing to fill all my bottles and 6L bladder, I could now search for a camp spot. A river or lake would have been choice, no such luck. I did spot some power lines on the hillside earlier on, then rode till I found the access point. I pitched on a somewhat grassy hill perched across the power line road. I was good for the night. The bugs were a bit much, I retreated to the shelter of the tent, ate dinner then off to bed.

Day's total/KM 80/elevation gain 332 meters
Total to date/KM 3461/Total elevation gain 20673 meters
I set the alarm for 6 AM, hotted some water for a 3 in 1 coffee, made my usual rolled oats, dishes were stowed and saved for later, I was on water rations.
I exited the power line road at 7:45 and turned East on 11, traffic was reasonably light, it was another warm one in the making. I then followed the 102 into Thunder Bay, some decent climbs made a little tougher with the heat.
Did groceries and a few other items from Walmart, After-bite was in order to address last nights bug fest, my ankles were actually now swollen. I picked up a bit more sunscreen as well.
There was no need or desire to go further into Thunder Bay, I sourced out a campground in-line with tomorrow’s exit strategy, the KAO. A call to confirm a spot, pricey, $44.00 to pitch. I mentioned I was only tenting and arriving by bike, Kristy (I assume the manager) dropped the price to $20, it was the rate she gave to all cyclists, sweet. I then stopped at Subway, time I finished lunch a proper storm was brewing. I was chased into the KOA arriving when heavy drops started to fall accompanied with the usual thunder and lightning. I paid for the night, on exit Kristy approached me and offered that I stay in one of the Camping Cabins, totally unexpected and a very generous offer, I accepted. It’s the first night since leaving Victoria that I haven’t slept in the tent, I felt out of sorts, a good out of sorts! I did laundry, the tent was packed wet from this mornings heavy dew. I took advantage of the last bit of sun, re-pitched in the field to dry it out. I cooked dinner in the shelter that was next to the cabin, a bit of time to relax then off to bed.

I returned to the Hospital first thing, all was well and got the green light to proceed. I spotted a bakery as I was heading out of town and decided to stop, coffee and a couple of sweet buns were in order, then another stop at the laundromat to dry some shorts. I was underway just before 9. I headed East on Hwy 11, "Mom’s Way". Beautiful morning, sunny, it was going to be a warm one. Winds were almost none existing, I stayed for the most part in the big ring up front making reasonable time. There were still some straight stretches but nothing like the Prairies. I even spotted an outcropping of rock not far East of Rainy River, there were also more trees! Soon the Prairie landscape would be but a distant memory. I arrived around 2, Fort Frances was busy little place and really not so little. I bought groceries then checked out the campground. I headed towards an area in the park where I spotted other tenters. I pitched then went about my usual business. The washrooms were a little dodgy and the tenter not far from me weren't real friendly. Towards evening a Police cruiser, actually several were making their rounds. They would re-appear with frequency, I soon figured this wasn't the best place to camp. It was getting too late to re-locate, I just took precautions and staying the night.
June 29th, 2019/Rest Day/Fort Frances
I spotted once again a Police cruiser, then the Ambulance all attending to this young fellow that was passed out. Unfortunately I had pitched in an area of the park that was known for a high occurrence of drugs, fighting and crime. The police advised me to move, I re-pitched further South in the park. I would have pushed on, it was the long weekend and I didn't want to be on the roads.
I gathered up my laundry and headed into town, bought a few items likely hard to find in the next towns and re-stocked the food supply. When I returned all was well, I prepped for tomorrow's departure, went for a swim the afternoon and just relaxed the day away. It was warm and humid, the wind picked up cooling things off a bit. I never do well in the heat, I'll will have to get used to it.

A thunder storm with high winds and rain overnight. When I woke at 5:45 the tent was dry, lots of debris on the ground. My intent was to park over the long weekend avoiding traffic, plans changed. I was underway by 7:45, thru the park and East on Hwy 11. I was soon on the bridge over Rainy Lake, once I crossed over the landscape made a considerable change. There was outcroppings of rock, trees now lined the roads edge, it was a welcomed change! 45 Km’s out I stopped at the first and apparently only General Store, there was nothing for the next 100k. The meter gain was throughout the section, gentle ups then rewarded by easy downs, it was a nice ride. I passed a lot of lakes, all marshy shores with the exception of one. A River spilled out over crushed rock, I was able to access with ease, it was smoking hot, time for a swim. I arrived in Anikokan around 5 the grocery store was already closed. I bought a can of spaghetti at the Esso Station and a soft drink for dinner. By the time I got to the Campground it was pushing 6. Nice quiet place, minimal shade but pitched on the grass. The bugs fed before I did, breakfast, lunch and dinner thanks to me.
July 1st, 2019/Rest Day/Anikokan
If Canada was celebrating then so was I! The camp host mentioned that there were "Free" hotdogs, corn on the cob and birthday cake at the park. You didn't need to twist my arm! I arrived along with the rest of town, all one hundred or so. I blended in well for a tourist and ran the hotdog, corn and cake line three times and no one was the wiser.
I spent the rest of the day getting things ready for tomorrow’s ride and trying to avoid the heat, it was another warm one.
